Cell Number Formats

Specifies various formats in which cell values are displayed.

You can display cell contents as strings, numbers, and expressions using various formats, and the same values can be displayed differently depending on the selected type of format.

▶How To

  1. Select a cell range for which to format numbers, and click Format > Cells.

  2. When the Format Cells dialog box appears, click the Number tab.

  3. If you choose one under Category, format settings appropriate for the selected category appear on the right.

  4. Select a type appropriate for the cell value, and check its appearance in the Sample area.

  5. Click OK to apply the format settings to the selected cell.

Using the Format Cells dialog box, you can define the following settings in the Number tab:

Category

General

No specific formats are applied. Worksheets that have no specific formats are set with the General format.

Number

Applies a common number format. You can specify settings for decimal places, a 1000 separator, and negative numbers.

Decimal places: Specifies the number of decimal places to display. For example, if an entered value is 555 and the Decimal places is set with '4', the cell value is displayed as 555.0000. If the number is greater than the cell width allows, it is automatically expressed as a scientific number.

Use 1000 Separator (,): A comma (,) is used per thousand unit as a separator. For example, 10000 is displayed as 10,000.

Negative numbers: Specifies the format in which to display negative numbers. For example, if you enter -1234 in a cell and select the (1234) type, the cell value is displayed as (1234).

Currency

Applies a currency format to numbers. You can specify settings for decimal places and negative numbers. If you enter a currency symbol before numbers, a 1000 separator is automatically applied.

Decimal places: Specifies the number of decimal places to display.

Symbol: Select one in the list of symbols for national currencies.

Negative numbers: Specifies the format in which to display negative numbers. For example, if you enter -1234 in a cell and select the (1234) format, the cell value is displayed as (1234).

Accounting

Applies an accounting format to numbers. Cells set with the accounting format are aligned based on the currency symbol and the decimal place. You can specify settings for decimal places and currency symbols.

Decimal places: Specifies the number of decimal places to display.

Symbol: Select one in the list of symbols for national currencies.

Date

Applies a date format to numbers. With the date format, numbers representing date and time are displayed with the selected date type. If you want to display time only, select Time in Category.

Type: There are various types of date formats to choose from. Numbers are displayed as the selected date type regardless of how you enter date and time.

Locale (location): Select your locale or location.

Time

Applies a time format to numbers. With the time format, numbers representing time are displayed with the selected time type. If you want to display both date and time, select Date in Category.

Type: There are various types of time formats to choose from. Numbers are displayed with the selected time type regardless of the date and time formats you used to enter the numbers.

Locale (location): Select your locale or location.

Percentage

Applies a percentage format to numbers. If you set the percentage format to the current cell, the cell value is multiplied by 100, and displayed with a percentage sign (%). You can specify the number of decimal places.

Decimal places: Specifies the number of decimal places to display.

Fraction

Displays cell values with a selected fraction type.

Type: You can choose from nine types of fractions.

Scientific

Displays cell values as exponential numbers. You can specify the number of decimal places.

Decimal places: Specifies the number of decimal places to display.

Text

Cell contents set with the Text format are recognized as strings and displayed as they are.

Special

Displays numbers in the formats for zip codes, phone numbers, social security numbers, etc.

Custom

All the types that can be used to display numbers are listed.
